Is it cheaper to buy land and build your own house abroad, or buy an existing property? I’m interested to hear from people who’ve actually done it, particularly in countries like Costa Rica, Spain and Portugal. Did building your own home work out cheaper than buying an existing property, or did unexpected costs, permits, labour and materials push the price up? Would you do it again, and what would you do differently?
